The Whole Story
This ride is a nice loop to get a feel for Walla Walla. Get a sense of the history and current vibe of our little berg — a quick city tour with a very nice loop around part of the valley. Views abound.
Start at Pioneer Park. Work your way over to Palouse Street and the homes that early wheat farming prosperity built. Then, drive through town by the County Courthouse. Travel up Main Street to see our revitalized downtown full of wine-tasting rooms and nice restaurants. Note the many bronze statues along the sidewalks. Stop into the oldest record store in the state, Hot Poop, and say hi, Jim.
On E. Main, the Sinclair has non-ethanol gas.
You’ll turn onto Isaacs Avenue, traveling past Whitman College. Then, you can “drag the gut” with the locals heading through the Eastgate neighborhood, eventually passing the Walla Walla Community College.
Isaacs Avenue changes to Mill Creek Rd.
Follow the route to 5-mile Road and Scenic Loop Road. The route turns around at the end of the pavement. On a clear day, the views are spectacular. You will be rewarded if you brave the 1/3 mile of gravel to the top of the hill for a fine viewpoint. Relax and take it in.
Follow the route to the south and west. Fun fact: This is the route we took Marcus Mumford on when he was in town for the 2015 Gentlemen of the Road tour.
You’ll cross into Oregon, going through very productive farmland.
As you head back north, the route goes through a serious winery area. You can find some of the best wines in the valley on JB George and Peppers Bridge Roads.
Fort Walla Walla Park is a nice stop. There are restrooms. There is also a fascinating museum and a Civil War vintage cemetery.
I hope you enjoyed the tour.
