The Whole Story
Get here — however you can. Combine this ride with something around Pendleton or a run out to Ukiah. If you like wide-open riding on challenging roads, this is a must.
Run it East to West or West to East. We often run it both ways on the same day. This quiet, narrow, two-lane road is packed with excitement. Huge open grasslands with cattle grazing, canyons, nice sweepers, and many 20 mph corners. If you’re lucky, a clear day view from the top highlights most of the big peaks in the Oregon and Washington Cascades.
There is gas in both Heppner and Pilot Rock.
Cautionary notes: This road is narrow with narrow or nonexistent shoulders. Stay in your lane. There is very little traffic, but don’t be surprised to see a dualy one-ton with a huge cattle trailer. It can be “dirty” in the springtime. The wind can be a factor at the top.
